Are you interested in learning more about printmaking? I offer a variety of workshop formats in my home studio on the Westside of Santa Cruz which has ample ventilation and a garden view.
The cost of a four-hour class is $450 total for one to two students or $600 total for three to four students. I am currently only scheduling the full time slot, not individual spots. Round up three of your friends and reserve your workshop which brings the fee to $150 each!
All levels of art experience are welcome. The fee includes all instruction and materials. Take a look at the formats outlined on this page and see which fits your interest and comfort level.
* If you would like to reserve a specific time slot in the coming months contact me directly through email (info@stacyfrank.com) or give me a call (415) 497-2203. Weekend sessions are preferred. *
Feedback from happy workshop students...
Stacy makes you feel welcomed the moment you arrive. She's thought of everything to make you feel comfortable and walks you through every step, which in my case was needed multiple times. Her patience was extraordinary. Her love of her "work" really comes through and made the workshop both inspiring and exciting. The time went by so quickly. It was great to leave with so many fun prints. I'll definitely be back. As a beginner, I highly recommend her workshop - it left me making me plans for a return visit to learn more and continue creating new pieces.

I participated in a fantastic workshop given by Stacy in her lovely studio recently, along with three of my friends. I did not have much prior experience with printmaking and I learned so much! Stacy was warm and welcoming. Her instruction, organization and ability to meet all of our needs as we moved through the various steps of creation was amazing. I highly recommend her workshops with her excellent instruction. Her art is gorgeous as well!

STARTING OUT
Drypoint and monotype monoprints
This beginning workshop combines two techniques - drypoint and monotype. Students use non-toxic materials to create their monoprints which incorporate line (drypoint) and color fields (monotype). A variety of ink colors are used to create vivid and varied images with a repeating design. Artists will use linseed oil-based ink, a metal scribe, brayers, rags, Q-tips and brushes to create their pieces. The plate size is 5" x 7" in this class; larger plates are used in the intermediate class.
Stencil monoprints
Students use scissors, hole punches and Exacto blades to create their designs from stencil board. With a cohesive palette of colors participants roll up their stencils using oil-based inks and brayers to make layered monoprints on 5" x 7" pieces of Rives BFK paper. This is a loose method which allows for rapid print creation and a variety of color combinations. Each monoprint is unique and incorporates several of the cut stencils along with techniques of masking, off-set and ghost printing.
Botanical monoprints on paper ephemera
Are you an encaustic, assemblage or collage artist who uses paper in your projects? This is a fun, fast way to create multiple pieces to be kept intact or to be used in other art forms. Upcycled paper including dictionary pages, maps, player piano music rolls, ledgers with handwriting and game cards are used as the base layer. Oil-based inks in a variety of colors and dried vegetation are combined to create intricate shapes. Bring your own paper and plants or use those provided during the workshop.
INTERMEDIATE ARTIST
Drypoint and monotype monoprints
This intermediate workshop combines two techniques - drypoint and monotype. This class format uses larger plates and larger pieces of printing paper than the beginning class.
Drypoint and stencil monoprints
My most popular workshop format includes the more advanced techniques including the multiple layers I use in my Flora and Miniflora series. Learn about various materials, methods and processes, how to use equipment, create and ink the plates. Students will achieve surprising and unique monoprints by combining several techniques including drypoint, monotype, masking, off-set and ghost printing. Explore non-toxic printmaking methods using materials such as plexiglass, 100% cotton paper, stencil board and linseed oil-based inks to create beautiful layered images.
ADVANCED ARTIST
Large format stencil monoprints
Artists use scissors, hole punches and Exacto blades to create their designs from stencil board. With a custom palette of colors participants roll up their stencils using oil-based inks and brayers to make layered monoprints on 15" x 22" or 30" x 22" pieces of Rives BFK paper. This is a loose method which allows for rapid print creation and a variety of color combinations. Each monoprint is unique and incorporates several of the cut stencils along with techniques of masking, off-set and ghost printing. This advanced class allows for the creation of a cohesive series of monoprints and is best suited for a single artist due to the size of the paper used. Materials include up to ten pieces of Rives BFK paper, additional pieces may be purchased for $5 each.
